Sharing is caring!

As a christian, there are just a few foundational beliefs that are needed to be able to call yourself a follower of Jesus. One of those foundational beliefs is the Trinity. The trinity is one of those things that can quite honestly be hard to wrap your head around. It is a doctrine that many don’t believe simply because they don’t understand it. I hope to clear up some things in this article and shed some light on what the trinity is and why it is an essential doctrine amongst Christians.

What is the Trinity?

Simply put, the trinity is the term used to describe the triune nature of God. In other words, God is made up of three persons. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. All persons are separate in nature but one in being. (see what I meant when I said it is kind of hard to wrap your head around?). Below is a picture that I found elsewhere and I believe is does a great job visually showing what I mean.

The Trinity can be hard to explain, but one of the best analogies I can thing of is the universe. The universe is made of essentially three things. Time, space and matter. Three distinct things, yet one universe.

One thing I want to be careful of is misunderstanding this as being three gods. That is not what the trinity is. This is one God with three distinct natures. Each nature being equal to God.

Is the word Trinity in the Bible?

No. The word trinity wasn’t introduced to the church until about 180 AD or so. The word never made it into the scriptures. But that doesn’t mean the concept isn’t there.

Matthew 28:19, 2 Corinthians 13:14 are just a couple verses that mention all three persons of the Trinity. These verses, and more, along with the ones we will cover below, show us a very clear picture of God. That being one God, three persons.

Why should we believe the Trinity is real?

For one thing, disbelief of the trinity is disbelief of the one true God. Jesus says “I and the Father are one”. And in 1 Corinthians, it says that there is not but one God.

So Jesus wasn’t created?

No. Jesus is God so Jesus could not be a created being like a lot of people believe. If you have read Genesis 1, you might have noticed that during creation, God said “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness…”. Why does he say our if he was alone? He says our because Jesus was there as well. John 1 tells us that the Word was God, and the word was made flesh” (Jesus).

I cover the topic of Jesus being God is much greater detail in the post titled, Is Jesus God?. Head there to learn more.

Conclusion

This was a bit shorter of an article than I normally write. But I wanted to give you something that was quick and to the point.

I want to finish up by saying, the Trinity is there, not to confuse you, but to make you understand the vastness of God. It helps us better understand what happened on the cross and why it was a big deal. It exalts the Son and the Holy Spirit. Not just one part of God. And it also lets us know that God is beyond our human comprehension.

With this knowledge, you can better understand the bible when in your studies. Thank You for reading and God Bless.
